Claremont and Catawba are two small townships near each other in eastern Catawba County, both with quaint downtown areas and both rooted in textile and agricultural histories. Claremont is home to the historic 1895 Bunker Hill Covered Bridge, one of two covered bridges left in North Carolina, and possibly the last wooden bridge in the United States with Haupt truss construction. Catawba has grown in recent years with its proximity to Lake Norman, and the expansion of Hwy 16 making travel to the Charlotte region more convenient.
