Completed in 1927 by Duke Energy for hydroelectric power generation, Lake Hickory is also a natural playground for a number of watersports from boating and jet skiing, to kayaking and fishing. Hickory's new Riverwalk trail system offers spectacular views of the lake from its elevated, overland trail and overwater bridge. The lake supports a variety of fish species, including bass, catfish, crappie, as well as being a natural habitat for turtles and water fowl from cranes, ducks, geese, and more. The lake serves as the main water source for the region and also contributes to the scenic beauty and outdoor opportunities in the Catawba Valley area. Several beautiful communities exists along the shorelines of the lake in all price points for lake lovers to enjoy.
