Playing key roles in both the American Revolution and Civil War, Morganton has historically prospered through economic development in the fields textiles, agriculture, and furniture, and continues on through development in the fields of healthcare, education, and manufacturing. As the county seat, Morganton offers a courthouse square in the center of downtown, which serves as a gathering spot for locals for festivals and events, and which is surrounded by a vibrant downtown full of shopping, dining, and more. The foothills of the Appalachians begin in Morganton, as well as the serene beauty of Lake James, one of Catawba River series of lakes owned by Duke Energy.
